Kuwait Stands Firm Against Somaliland Independence, Upholds Somalia’s Sovereignty

Kuwait has strongly rejected recent moves to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, reaffirming its commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty. The Foreign Minister stressed that Somalia’s sovereignty over all its territories must be respected, and any actions that undermine it are unacceptable. This firm stance comes as concerns grow over security and stability in the Horn of Africa.

At the 22nd extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah, the Kuwaiti minister called the recognition “an infamous declaration” and a violation of international law. He also warned that such actions threaten peace in the Red Sea region and could fuel extremist activity.

Kuwait also emphasized full support for the territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The Foreign Minister said that protecting Somalia’s sovereignty is key to avoiding further tensions and keeping the region stable. He noted that ignoring internationally recognized borders could increase conflict and unrest.

The minister thanked Saudi Arabia, Somalia, and Turkey for organizing the OIC meeting. He also praised OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha for bringing member states together to reaffirm Somalia’s territorial integrity. The meeting included Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali and representatives from other OIC countries.

He added that the Israeli move to recognize Somaliland ignored diplomatic norms and international law. “This action challenges global rules, threatens regional stability, and violates Somalia’s sovereignty,” he said. He called on all countries to respect international law and maintain peaceful relations with Somalia.

The Kuwaiti official also highlighted the risks of this move, noting that expansionist efforts could harm Somalia and neighboring nations. He urged diplomatic efforts to prevent escalation and to keep Somali territory united and safe.

Finally, Kuwait reaffirmed support for Somalia, urging all regional and international actors to respect its recognized borders. The meeting ended with OIC members agreeing on the need to protect Somalia’s sovereignty and maintain peace in the Horn of Africa.
