Kuwait Records Strong Growth in IP Services

Kuwait has reported a sharp rise in intellectual property activity, with official data showing increased transactions across trademarks, patents and industrial designs, generating millions in fees for the state.

In Kuwait, Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Marwa Al-Jaidan said intellectual property services are expanding quickly as part of efforts to strengthen commercial protections and support a more knowledge-based economy.

According to the 2025 report from the Trademarks and Patents Department, a total of 68,632 transactions were recorded, generating around KD 6.69 million ($21.7 million) in fees.

Officials said the growth reflects ongoing regulatory reforms aimed at improving transparency and strengthening investor confidence in the business environment.

Most activity came from trademark services, which accounted for more than 62,000 transactions, including registrations, renewals and ownership transfers. Patent filings and industrial design applications also saw steady activity, though on a smaller scale.

Authorities said the increase in filings highlights growing engagement from companies and individuals in protecting brands, inventions and industrial designs in the local market.

The ministry also linked stronger intellectual property systems to wider efforts to reduce misuse of the sector, including financial crimes such as money laundering, through tighter monitoring and compliance measures.

Officials said Kuwait continues to coordinate with regional and international frameworks, including GCC-level systems, to improve consistency in intellectual property protection.
