Kuwait Airways Fleet Expansion Moves Forward Despite Setbacks

Kuwait Airways is pushing ahead with its Kuwait Airways fleet expansiondespite facing aircraft delivery delays and financial hurdles. Abdulmohsen Al-Fagaan, Chairman of the airline’s board, confirmed the progress during the company’s annual general meeting.

The airline anticipates receiving an Airbus A321neo by the end of August. Additionally, two Airbus A330-900neos should arrive before December. Once delivered, the Kuwait Airways fleet expansion will bring the total number of active aircraft to 30, up from the current 27. Al-Fagaan stressed that the delays are not unique to Kuwait Airways. Many global carriers face similar setbacks due to supply chain disruptions.

Kuwait Airways has partnered with Saudi Railways, Saudi Airlines, and tech provider Amadeus to enhance operations. These collaborations aim to improve service quality and streamline booking processes. Despite these efforts, the airline struggles to meet its 2025 target of 5.5 million passengers. Geopolitical tensions and fleet limitations have slowed growth.

The airline has reduced financial violations from 16 to seven, according to Al-Fagaan. Past issues included questionable contracts and excessive spending on events. For instance, Kuwait Airways terminated a controversial deal with Kuwait Aviation Services Company (KASCO) last year. The airline also admitted overspending on its 65th-anniversary celebrations.

Airbus compensated for delivery delays with service credits rather than cash. These funds will cover spare parts, training, and maintenance. Al-Fagaan did not disclose the exact amount but called it “a good sum.” The airline also withheld its 2024 financial results during the briefing.

The Kuwait Airways fleet expansion remains a priority despite obstacles. The airline aims to stabilize operations and resolve audit findings promptly. With new aircraft and stronger partnerships, Kuwait Airways hopes to regain its competitive edge in the Gulf aviation market.
