Kurdistan Flag Day 2025 brought citizens together across the region as President Barzani highlighted the flag as a symbol of unity, peace, and Kurdish identity. He explained that Kurdistan Flag Day reminds Kurds of their enduring desire for freedom and dignity. The celebration also encourages coexistence among all communities.
Speaking in Erbil, President Barzani stressed that Kurdistan gains strength through harmony and teamwork. He urged citizens to look beyond political or religious differences. Everyone must work together to build a stable and prosperous Kurdistan. Unity under the Kurdistan flag ensures lasting peace and progress. Moreover, it promotes dialogue and mutual understanding throughout the region.
The Kurdish flag first flew in 1946 over government buildings during the Republic of Mahabad in western Iran. Although the republic lasted briefly, the flag became a powerful symbol of resistance and Kurdish identity. Its red band honors the blood of freedom fighters, while the white band represents peace and equality. The green band symbolizes the Kurdish homeland. At the center, a golden 21-pointed star shows hope and renewal, inspiring generations of Kurds.
In 2004, the Kurdistan Region officially declared December 17 as Kurdistan Flag Day. Since then, millions of Kurds celebrate the day annually, proudly displaying the “Alla Rengîn,” or “colorful flag.” This year, citizens, leaders, and organizations marked the occasion with pride. They emphasized the flag’s role in promoting dialogue, coexistence, and constructive engagement within a federal and democratic Iraq.
President Barzani further highlighted that the flag should always convey peace, neighborliness, and understanding. He stated that Kurdistan will remain a stabilizing force and a bridge for dialogue in the region. Across the Kurdistan Region, people celebrated with pride, reinforcing unity and the enduring value of the Kurdish flag. Ultimately, Kurdistan Flag Day reminds citizens of their shared history, cultural identity, and commitment to peace. The celebrations strengthen solidarity, hope, and the vision of a harmonious and prosperous Kurdistan under the national banner.
