Malaysian Gas Fields Set for Joint Development

Kuwait’s KUFPEC has signed agreements to advance development of two Malaysian Gas Fields off Sarawak. The company’s subsidiary, KUFPEC Malaysia, reached the agreements with TotalEnergies, PTTEP and Petronas Carigali. The partnership covers the Lang Lebah field, known as SK410B, and the B14 gas field. Together, the companies aim to coordinate development and make better use of Malaysia’s natural gas resources.

KUFPEC announced that the agreements establish a framework for closer cooperation between the participating energy companies. In particular, the partners intend to connect development plans across the two production-sharing contracts. This approach could improve coordination and support more efficient use of infrastructure and resources. Furthermore, the collaboration aims to create value while allowing the companies to pursue future production opportunities.

The farm-out agreements represent an important step towards developing and commercialising the fields’ gas resources. By bringing the partners closer together, the arrangement provides a basis for an integrated development strategy. Consequently, the companies can coordinate their efforts while pursuing the long-term potential of both assets. The agreements also strengthen KUFPEC’s involvement in Malaysia’s energy sector.

KUFPEC Chief Executive Officer Eisa Al-Maraghi said the partnership supports the company’s strategic direction. He explained that KUFPEC wants to work with an international operator to accelerate development. Moreover, he highlighted the importance of using Malaysia’s gas resources effectively. Al-Maraghi added that the collaboration aims to deliver shared value and benefits for every participating company.

Ownership Shares and Operatorship

Once the agreements receive the necessary approvals and meet customary conditions, the partners will hold defined interests. TotalEnergies will own 30 percent of both fields and serve as their operator. Meanwhile, KUFPEC will retain a 25 percent interest in each development. PTTEP will also hold 25 percent, while Petronas Carigali will own the remaining 20 percent.

This ownership structure gives each partner a clear stake in the projects. Additionally, TotalEnergies will lead operations through its role as the designated operator. However, the companies must complete regulatory procedures before finalising the arrangements. The announcement did not specify a completion date for the agreements.

KUFPEC’s International Energy Portfolio

KUFPEC operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation. The company focuses on exploring, developing and producing oil and natural gas outside Kuwait. Through its international portfolio, it participates in energy projects across several countries. Its activities support Kuwait’s presence in overseas exploration and production.

The Malaysian Gas Fields agreements add another development opportunity to KUFPEC’s international operations. They also bring together companies with interests in Malaysia’s energy industry. Through this partnership, the participants intend to coordinate investment and development activities. Ultimately, progress will depend on regulatory approvals and the partners’ implementation of their agreed plans.
