Katara Prize for Arabic Novel Breaks Record with 2,610 Entries, Showcasing Growing Influence Across Arab World

The Katara Prize for Arabic Novel has reached a record high, attracting 2,610 entries, the largest number since its launch in 2014. This milestone shows the growing influence of the award in promoting literary creativity across the Arab world.

The Cultural Village Foundation, Katara, reported that this number surpassed the previous record of 2,021 entries in 2021. Among the submissions, 1,488 were unpublished novels, while 578 were published works from 2025. In addition, 303 were unpublished children’s novels, 107 were unpublished studies on novels, 11 were published Qatari novels, and 123 were unpublished historical novels.

The submissions came from across the Arab region. Egypt and Sudan led with 963 entries, followed by the Levant and Iraq with 719. The Maghreb submitted 666, and Gulf countries contributed 245. Even non-Arab nations participated, sending 17 entries. This shows the prize’s growing international appeal.

Katara Director-General Dr. Khalid Al Sulaiti said the record participation demonstrates the prize’s rising reputation as it enters its second decade. He added that the award celebrates writers while boosting Arabic literature worldwide. Translating winning novels into English and French also expands the prize’s reach.

The award includes six categories: unpublished novels, published works, historical novels, children’s novels, Qatari novels, and studies on novel criticism. The total prize pool reaches $375,000, with top winners receiving $30,000 per category. This strong incentive motivates authors to produce high-quality works and inspires the next generation of writers.

Moreover, the high number of entries highlights the prize’s role in fostering cultural dialogue. Authors can present unique perspectives, exploring themes from history and society to personal narratives and imaginative storytelling.

The Katara Prize for Arabic Novel reflects Qatar’s commitment to promoting cultural development and literary excellence. By offering international exposure and financial support, it ensures Arabic literature continues to thrive and reach global audiences.
