Jordan to Increase Electricity Supplies to Iraq to 200 Megawatts

Jordan plans to raise electricity supplies to Iraq to 200 megawatts. Officials highlighted this step as part of broader cooperation in the energy sector. Both countries see the project as a key driver for sustainable transformation and regional stability.

During a recent panel on energy cooperation, the Jordanian Energy Minister explained that the power link with Iraq represents a long-term vision. He emphasized that the interconnection will not only boost Iraq’s electricity supplies but also support cleaner energy sources. In his words, the shared project opens the door to more sustainable growth for both nations.

Furthermore, the Director of Jordan’s National Electric Power Company noted that Amman had already approved Baghdad’s request to extend their supply agreement. The extension adds another year of electricity support to Iraq. This decision demonstrates Jordan’s commitment to strengthen ties and ensure continuous energy flow across the border.

Earlier this year, the two countries also achieved important milestones. In July, Jordan confirmed that the second phase of the electrical interconnection would be ready by August. As planned, the upgrade enabled Jordan to start providing 150 megawatts of electricity to Iraq by the end of that month. The progress marked a significant leap compared to the first quarter of 2024, when Iraq had only received 40 megawatts.

The first phase of the project had linked Jordan’s Risha power plant to the Rutba station in western Iraq. The line operated at 132 kilovolts and set the foundation for future expansion. With the latest step, officials underlined that electricity supplies to Iraq can now reach 200 megawatts. This increase not only addresses Iraq’s domestic energy demand but also strengthens regional cooperation.

Additionally, both governments agreed in early 2024 to provide Iraq with an initial 40 megawatts through a deal signed in Amman. That agreement laid the groundwork for today’s expansion. Looking forward, experts believe further connecting stages may push supplies even higher in the medium term.

In conclusion, Jordan’s plan to raise electricity supplies to Iraq reflects a shared strategy for energy security. Step by step, the project deepens bilateral ties and brings tangible results for people on both sides of the border. With every new phase, electricity supplies to Iraq become a stronger pillar of regional cooperation.
