Iraq’s First Fully Solar-Powered Community Opens in Kurdistan, Housing 200 Residents

Erbil, Iraq – [April 14th] – The Rwanga Foundation has achieved a national milestone with the inauguration of Iraq’s first completely solar-powered residential community. The newly completed Kulak Solar Village, located southeast of Erbil, provides sustainable living for 200 residents across 32 modern homes. All homes operate entirely on renewable energy.

This pioneering development establishes a new standard for green communities in Iraq. All 32 residences enjoy continuous solar-powered electricity day and night. The homes are equipped with energy-efficient appliances and lighting systems designed to maximize the solar energy supply. An integrated sustainable water management system ensures responsible water use throughout the community. Residents have full access to shared agricultural programs that promote food security and self-sufficiency.

“The completion of Kulak Solar Village represents a transformative moment for sustainable development in Iraq,” said the Director of Rwanga Foundation, Hassan Aladdin “We’ve created not just housing, but a complete living environment that harmonizes modern comforts with environmental responsibility.”

The village’s design specifically addresses Iraq’s climate challenges. It features architectural solutions that keep homes cool during extreme summer temperatures while maximizing solar energy capture. The reliable solar power system eliminates dependence on traditional electricity grids. This provides residents with consistent power without interruptions.

In addition to providing housing advantages, the initiative stands as a key example of renewable energy’s transformative potential for local Iraqi communities. The 200 inhabitants of Kulak have emerged as trailblazers in eco-friendly living. They enjoy a higher quality of life while substantially decreasing their ecological impact.
