The Chaldean Church in Iraq urged citizens on Thursday to reject “corrupt or armed” candidates in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Church made clear that its loyalty remains fully with Iraq and its people. Christians face growing pressure to ensure fair representation in the political process.
Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako, Patriarch of the Chaldeans in Iraq and worldwide, addressed the Christian community. He urged wide participation in the November 11, 2025 elections. Voters should select candidates known for integrity, sincerity, and respect for Iraq’s diversity. The Patriarch warned against “corrupt or armed” candidates exploiting power for personal gain.
The Church rejects candidates “tainted with corruption or backed by armed groups controlling towns and resources in the Nineveh Plain.” Christians must not become tools for internal political conflicts. Sako emphasized the need for representation that serves Iraq’s citizens fairly and without discrimination.
The Church formally requested Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission to ensure fair voting among Chaldeans, Assyrians, and Syriacs. This request was not implemented. Despite this, the IHEC promised to uphold minority rights. It also committed to protect Christian participation in public life.
“Christians, despite their wounds, will continue striving to secure their constitutional rights,” Sako said. “They will not surrender. The Church will not submit to injustice.” He reaffirmed that the Church’s allegiance is entirely to Iraq and its people.
Iraq’s 329-member parliament reserves nine seats for minority communities. Five seats go to Christians—one each in Baghdad, Duhok, Nineveh, Erbil, and Kirkuk. One seat is for the Shabak in Nineveh, one for the Feyli Kurds in Wasit, and one for Sabean-Mandaeans in Baghdad.
Campaigning began on October 3. The political race continues until November 11. Cardinal Sako urged Christians to evaluate candidates carefully. He repeated that the community must reject any “corrupt or armed” candidates seeking to exploit their vote.
The Patriarch’s message stresses integrity, unity, and vigilance. Christians are called to protect their community’s future with responsibility and awareness.
