Iraq’s national team, the Lions of Mesopotamia, remains determined to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia, the Lions of Mesopotamia are preparing for the crucial play-offs in November. Coach Graham Arnold emphasized that the team’s journey is far from over.
Jeddah – Iraq’s football coach Graham Arnold defended his team after the recent draw, insisting they still have a strong chance to qualify. He highlighted that two important play-off matches await later this year.
Arnold praised the players’ effort, saying they “fought hard” despite missing key forwards Ayman Hussein and Ali Al-Hamadi. He explained that their absence impacted Iraq’s attacking strength. The coach hopes both players recover in time for November’s fixtures.
The Iraqi coach also criticized the Asian play-off system. He said, “Teams with seven days’ rest advanced directly. This structure feels unusual compared to my past experience.” Arnold recalled his time with Australia, noting that play-offs were always on neutral grounds.
Star forward Ayman Hussein apologized to fans for the disappointing draw. He admitted missing the matches due to an injury that reduced his fitness to 75%. Hussein described the play-off rules as “unfair,” pointing out that Iraq finished with four points without conceding goals yet still faces extra matches.
Despite these challenges, Arnold and Hussein emphasized that the World Cup dream motivates the team. Arnold stated the Lions of Mesopotamia will “fight until the end,” signaling determination and resilience. He urged fans to continue supporting the players during this critical stage.
Hussein echoed his coach, stressing that representing Iraq on the global stage is the ultimate goal. He called on fans to remain hopeful, saying the Lions of Mesopotamia will give their best performance in the upcoming play-offs.
The team has resumed training sessions in Jeddah, focusing on strategy, fitness, and cohesion. Arnold confirmed that tactical adjustments will be key to improving offensive output. He added that every player is motivated to make the nation proud.
As November approaches, the Iraqi team faces a defining moment. The Lions of Mesopotamia aim to overcome setbacks, beat fatigue, and secure their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
