Iraq Launches First Subcritical Nuclear System to Boost Science and Energy Future

Iraq took a major step in scientific advancement today as Naim Al-Aboudi, Minister of Higher Education and President of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission, officially laid the foundation stone for Iraq’s first subcritical nuclear system. The event marked a historic day in Baghdad and signaled new opportunities for research, education, and clean energy.

The ceremony gathered officials, experts, and academics who highlighted the importance of this project. The plan also includes central laboratories and cooperation with the National Authority for Nuclear and Radiation Control. International specialists will support the project and ensure the system meets global standards.

Al-Aboudi described the launch as a turning point for Iraq’s scientific community. He said the ministry’s reforms during the last three years paved the way for this achievement.

According to him, Iraq’s first subcritical nuclear system will provide an integrated environment where researchers can collaborate and explore advanced solutions. The laboratories will give students and academics practical training that directly strengthens the country’s education system.

The project focuses on peaceful applications. It will deliver benefits in medicine, agriculture, industry, and environmental protection. With these applications, the system will expand academic research and serve the community at large. By following international safety requirements, the initiative will create a secure path for nuclear knowledge in Iraq.

Al-Aboudi underlined that this project supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He highlighted SDG 4, which improves quality education through hands-on training, and SDG 7, which promotes affordable and clean energy. Through this system, Iraq aims to secure a sustainable and forward-looking future.

Ultimately, Iraq’s first subcritical nuclear system represents more than a scientific achievement. It stands as a symbol of reform, progress, and a vision for clean energy. This cornerstone marks the start of Iraq’s new era of innovation and sustainability.
