Iraq Expands Maritime Transport Fleet with Bold Strategy

Iraq expands maritime transport fleet with a new plan that focuses on growth and modernization. This move marks a major step toward improving Iraq’s trade capacity. Officials believe that stronger maritime infrastructure will support both regional and global competition.

According to transport authorities, Iraq’s General Company for Maritime Transport has already launched a clear strategy. The company plans to build 15 new multipurpose vessels through several financing methods. This expansion will significantly boost Iraq’s shipping capabilities.

The plan breaks down into three parts. First, Iraq will construct eight ships through investment partnerships. Next, the country will secure five vessels with support from a Japanese loan. Finally, two ships will be funded directly through the operational budget. This structure ensures balanced financial resources.

Currently, the General Company for Maritime Transport operates six commercial ships. Three of them carry 14,000 tons each. Another carries 10,000 tons, while two others provide service support to industrial and commercial ships. However, authorities insist that this fleet is not enough. With global trade demands rising, Iraq expands maritime transport fleet to meet modern standards.

Officials emphasized that this initiative is part of a long-term vision. The broader strategy seeks to enhance national maritime power. By adding advanced ships, Iraq hopes to secure a stronger presence in global trade routes. The move also aims to reduce reliance on foreign carriers.

This development is not sudden. In March 2023, the Ministry of Transport revealed a technical plan. That plan included guidelines for acquiring advanced ships from international providers. The ministry stressed that more ships mean stronger trade flows. It also explained that modern vessels would allow Iraq to transport cargo more efficiently.

Experts believe this effort carries multiple benefits. It will not only strengthen trade but also create job opportunities. Moreover, it will encourage foreign investment in Iraq’s port facilities. Many observers see the project as vital for the Al-Faw Grand Port, a cornerstone of Iraq’s maritime future.

In conclusion, Iraq expands maritime transport fleet to increase national capacity. The initiative reflects a strategic push to modernize infrastructure, empower trade, and compete internationally. With new vessels on the way, Iraq’s shipping sector enters a new chapter.
