HMC Performs Qatar’s First Frozen Red Blood Cell Transfusion Successfully

Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Laboratory Medicine and Pathology Department recently completed Qatar’s first-ever blood transfusion using frozen red cells. This marks a major breakthrough in treating patients with complex blood conditions and special needs.

The patient suffered from Thalassemia Major and faced several immune system challenges. After the transfusion, doctors reported no adverse reactions. Instead, the patient’s hemoglobin levels stabilized, organ function improved, and overall health got better. Therefore, this success offers new hope for patients with rare blood types.

This achievement was possible thanks to HMC’s newly created frozen red cells stock. These blood cells are stored at ultra-low temperatures, allowing them to remain usable for up to 30 years. Consequently, this long-term storage helps maintain a steady supply of rare blood types for patients who need hard-to-match transfusions.

Before transfusion, the frozen blood cells undergo a careful thawing and washing process. This process removes protective chemicals and ensures a safer and more precise match for the patient. Moreover, it is especially vital for patients with rare blood groups or complex antibodies, who often face difficulties in finding compatible blood.

Dr. Einas Al Kuwari, Chair of Clinical Services at HMC, called this a key step forward in blood transfusion care. “Frozen red cells solve many long-standing problems,” she said. “They allow us to give life-saving blood exactly when patients need it, safely and precisely.”

Furthermore, she added that this breakthrough shows HMC’s dedication to patient-focused care. “This first transfusion opens the door to advanced blood treatments in Qatar,” Dr. Al Kuwari explained.

Looking ahead, HMC plans to expand the use of frozen red cells to help more patients with difficult transfusion needs. This will reduce shortages of rare blood types and improve treatment success across the region.

As a regional healthcare leader, HMC continues to invest in new technologies and patient-centered solutions. In summary, this achievement highlights Qatar’s commitment to advancing healthcare quality through modern, innovative methods.
