Global Food Systems: Oman Joins UN Summit to Advance Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security

Global food systems are under the spotlight as the Sultanate of Oman participates in the second United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS+4). The event is currently taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and will conclude on Tuesday. Notably, the governments of Ethiopia and Italy are co-hosting this summit. It brings together global leaders and experts to assess efforts in transforming food systems worldwide. Oman’s delegation is led by Dr. Saud Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.

Specifically, the summit aims to evaluate progress toward building sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems. These systems must support food security and align with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, the event emphasizes the need for integrated strategies that address food insecurity and environmental sustainability at the same time. Stakeholders from both public and private sectors are engaging in high-level discussions.

In recent years, global food systems have faced multiple challenges due to climate change, supply chain disruptions, and unequal access to resources. Therefore, the summit serves as a platform for joint action and international collaboration. Participants are focusing on mobilising resources and enhancing policy frameworks. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure food systems can withstand future shocks and meet nutritional needs.

Moreover, the summit includes diverse representation. Heads of state, ministers, UN agencies, NGOs, researchers, youth, and farmers are all attending the discussions. These participants are exchanging ideas, sharing experiences, and identifying priority actions. During the proceedings, Dr. Al Habsi emphasized the importance of partnerships and cross-border cooperation in achieving long-term food security. He also highlighted Oman’s commitment to strengthening food production and water resource management.

Furthermore, Oman continues to support regional and global initiatives that promote agricultural innovation and environmental balance. This participation underscores Oman’s role in addressing food challenges beyond its borders. Clearly, global food systems must evolve to serve growing populations and shifting climates. Events like this summit are essential for aligning efforts and tracking real progress.

As the UNFSS+4 Summit concludes, delegates are expected to release a final statement. It will outline the key outcomes and next steps for transforming food systems worldwide.
