In a special dialogue session marking the 34th anniversary of Kuwait’s liberation, Dr. Richard Haass, former special assistant to the late U.S. President George H.W. Bush, revealed critical details of Kuwait’s liberation process. Dr. Haass highlighted the pivotal role of George H.W. Bush’s leadership during the Iraqi aggression and how decisive actions led to the creation of an unprecedented international alliance to liberate Kuwait.
The event, titled “Decision-Making: The Liberation of Kuwait,” was hosted by the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Saud Al-Nasser Al-Sabah Diplomatic Institute. The session featured Dr. Haass and Sheikh Nawaf Al-Saud Al-Sabah, Vice Chairman and CEO of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation. It was attended by several dignitaries, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Al-Sabah and Minister of Oil Tarik Al-Roumi.
During the session, Dr. Haass shared for the first time details of the late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad’s September 1990 visit to the United States, which played a crucial role in the formation of the coalition that eventually liberated Kuwait on February 26, 1991. Haass also commended the significant contributions of Kuwait’s then-ambassador to the U.S., Sheikh Saud Nasser Al-Saud Al-Sabah, whose diplomatic efforts and media coordination were vital in rallying international support for Kuwait’s liberation.
Sheikh Nawaf Al-Saud emphasized the importance of principled decision-making and strong relationships in resolving global crises. He also noted the value of such dialogue sessions in reminding current generations of the struggles Kuwait’s leaders faced during the liberation process.
The discussions served as a powerful reminder of the political, diplomatic, and military efforts that led to the end of the brutal Iraqi invasion, highlighting the unwavering commitment of Kuwait’s leadership and its international allies.
