The Education Above All (EAA) Foundation, through its Reach Out To All (ROTA) programme, has partnered with the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and UNICEF. They launched a landmark initiative aimed at empowering over 100,000 students to lead climate action and promote sustainable development across Zanzibar.
Titled Youth-Led Climate Change Actions for Sustainable Development in Zanzibar, the initiative will be rolled out in 216 secondary schools across all 11 districts of Zanzibar. This includes both Unguja and Pemba islands.
With $3.5 million in funding—co-funded by EAA Foundation with support from Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and UNICEF—the programme targets more than 100,000 secondary school students. Additionally, it focuses on 5,600 out-of-school youth aged 15 to 24. It seeks to engage them in climate adaptation, resilience, and mitigation efforts.
The initiative aims to integrate climate change education into the secondary school curriculum. It intends to build knowledge of climate resilience and adaptation among out-of-school youth. Moreover, it aims to mobilize young people to lead environmental initiatives in their schools and communities.
