Doha Film Festival Announces 2026 Film Competition Shortlist

Doha Film Festival has announced 15 films selected for its 2026 International Feature Film Competition. The selection brings together filmmakers from several regions and cinematic traditions. Films come from the Arab world, Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. The lineup highlights independent cinema and stories from communities with limited representation.

The competition includes 11 films supported through the Doha Film Institute Grants programme. In addition, seven selected films come from women directors. Therefore, the lineup reflects a strong focus on diverse filmmaking voices. It also gives emerging creators an opportunity to reach wider audiences.

The festival says the competition will showcase distinctive stories and original cinematic approaches. Moreover, the selected works explore different experiences across cultures and regions. These films will compete for several awards during the festival. The programme will also connect filmmakers with audiences and industry professionals.

Fatma Hassan Alremaihi leads the Doha Film Institute and directs the festival. She said cinema can connect people across borders and cultures. According to Alremaihi, film can create understanding despite geographical and social differences. She also highlighted the importance of giving independent filmmakers space to present their work.

Furthermore, Alremaihi praised the filmmakers for their creativity and determination. She said the selected works carry important stories with strong artistic purpose. She also expressed pride in Doha’s role within their filmmaking journeys. The festival aims to help audiences discover, discuss and remember these films.

The International Feature Film Competition accepts both narrative and documentary productions. Selected films must receive their Middle East and North Africa premieres through the competition. A five-member international jury will evaluate the participating films. The jury includes professionals from different areas of the global film industry.

Several awards will recognise outstanding achievements during the competition. The Best Narrative Award carries a prize of $75,000. Meanwhile, the Best Documentary Award offers $50,000 to its recipient. The festival will also present awards for artistic achievement and performance.

The Best Artistic Achievement Award carries a prize of $45,000. The Best Performance Award offers a $15,000 prize. These awards recognise different aspects of filmmaking and creative achievement. As a result, filmmakers can gain recognition across several artistic categories.

The International Federation of Film Critics will also participate in the 2026 festival. Its three-member jury will select a film for its special prize. The award will recognise significant achievement within the competition. This addition will bring further attention to the participating filmmakers and their work.

The 2026 festival will run from November 19 through November 27. During that period, Doha will welcome filmmakers and cinema audiences from around the world. Industry professionals will also gather to discuss independent film and storytelling. The programme will create opportunities for cultural exchange and professional connections.

The Doha Film Festival continues to position Doha as a meeting point for international cinema. Its 2026 competition brings together different perspectives through narrative and documentary filmmaking. The selected films also reflect growing interest in stories from underrepresented regions. Overall, the programme offers audiences a broad view of contemporary independent cinema.
