CMU-Q Research Symposium Celebrates Student Innovation and Discovery

The CMU-Q research symposium once again spotlighted student innovation at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. This year’s Meeting of the Minds featured groundbreaking undergraduate projects, including award-winning cancer research.

Majed Alnama, a recent graduate in biological sciences, won the top prize in the Extensive Research category. His project focused on how extracellular environments affect metastatic breast cancer cells. Faculty member Mohamed Bouaouina supervised his work throughout the process.

Each year, the CMU-Q research symposium inspires students to pursue inquiry and discovery. In 2025, the event showcased 52 posters, including 13 senior honors theses. Furthermore, a panel of 57 judges—including 37 external experts—evaluated the projects.

Dean Michael Trick praised the participants. “Meeting of the Minds highlights student dedication, scientific exploration, and intellectual curiosity,” he said. “As always, we are proud of their exceptional work.”

Additionally, Al Rayan Bank sponsored the event for the third consecutive year. Hassan Al-Jaidah, AGM Premier Banking, represented the bank at the awards ceremony. In her remarks, Eman Al Naemi from the bank’s Corporate Communications division emphasized their continued support. “Research fuels innovation,” she said. “We are honored to encourage students’ creativity and efforts.”

Meanwhile, Associate Dean for Research Jennifer Bruder also expressed gratitude. “Al Rayan Bank’s support plays a vital role in recognizing our students’ achievements,” she stated.

Notably, this year’s organizers introduced a revised award structure to honor achievements across different research stages. As a result, nine awards were distributed across four categories: Early Research, Best Poster Design, Social and Environmental Impact, and Extensive Research.

In the Early Research category, Nasser Alansari and Hamad Al-Thani earned first place. Alanoud Al Thani received Best Poster Design for her engaging visual presentation. Moreover, Abdulrahman Shaar became the first recipient in the Social and Environmental Impact category.

The CMU-Q research symposium originated at Carnegie Mellon’s Pittsburgh campus in 1995. Unlike traditional conferences, it encourages broader community engagement. Students learn to present complex research in accessible ways.

Through this unique format, CMU-Q connects student work with real-world challenges. Clearly, the event continues to foster research that drives both local and global impact.
