CBSE Takes Safety-First Approach, Cancels Final-Year Exams in Gulf Countries

CBSE Class XII exams face cancellation across several Gulf countries, affecting thousands of Indian students. The decision comes amid ongoing regional disruptions.

The Central Board of Secondary Education informed schools in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE that it cancelled all scheduled Class XII exams from 16 March to 10 April 2026. It also cancelled previously postponed exams in these regions. This approach ensures that students receive fair treatment under the current circumstances.

Furthermore, CBSE emphasized that authorities are working to finalize alternative methods for evaluating students. They plan to announce the approach for declaring results soon. Students and schools are awaiting clear guidance to understand how final grades will be calculated without the cancelled examinations.

According to the circular issued by Controller of Examinations Dr Sanyam Bhardwaj, CBSE has coordinated closely with Indian diplomatic missions and regional offices in the Gulf. These steps ensure that all schools and students receive timely notifications regarding exam cancellations and updates.

Earlier, the board issued multiple circulars on 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 March to review safety and feasibility. Some exams had already been postponed, highlighting CBSE’s commitment to student welfare. By cancelling exams now, the board prioritizes both safety and fairness.

The cancellation significantly impacts students preparing for crucial final-year exams. Many students and parents expressed concern over academic planning and university admissions. Nevertheless, CBSE assures that it will provide a transparent and consistent evaluation system, minimizing disruptions in students’ educational paths.

Experts note that alternative evaluation methods, such as internal assessments and previous academic records, may form the basis for results. Additionally, schools are preparing to support students during this transition to ensure they understand new grading procedures.

Overall, the cancellation underscores CBSE’s responsibility to safeguard student welfare while maintaining academic integrity. By acting decisively, the board addresses challenges in the Gulf region and maintains trust among students, schools, and parents.
