Boccia Empowers People with Disabilities Across Saudi Arabia

Boccia, a precision ball sport, is making a significant impact in empowering individuals with severe physical disabilities across Saudi Arabia. This is according to Mohsen Al-Ismail, the president of the Saudi Boccia Federation.

This sport, closely related to bowls and petanque, was introduced into the Paralympic Games in 1984. It has since gained widespread popularity. Initially designed for individuals with cerebral palsy, the game has since expanded to include athletes with various disabilities that affect motor skills.

Al-Ismail emphasized the Federation’s commitment to promoting boccia throughout the Kingdom. The aim is to nurture local talent and increase participation in the sport.

Fast Facts:

  • The sport was first played by just 19 athletes from five countries in 1984. By 2024, the number of participants had grown to 116 players from 75 countries.
  • Boccia is particularly beneficial for individuals with cerebral palsy. It helps to improve balance, stimulate blood circulation, strengthen muscles, and support motor rehabilitation.
