Barzani Highlights Commitment to Elections and Coexistence in Duhok

In a major address in Duhok, President Masoud Barzani emphasized the importance of the democratic process in Kurdistan. He outlined key priorities, including government formation, water security, and social cohesion.

Barzani expressed optimism for the upcoming elections for Iraq’s sixth parliamentary session. He assured citizens that the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) remains committed to ensuring a fair and peaceful electoral process.

Reflecting on history, he highlighted the KDP’s long-standing support for elections. “Even during times of chaos, we believed in the power of the people’s vote,” he said. “The KDP has participated in every election from the first to the latest without exception.” This demonstrates the party’s dedication to the democratic process in Kurdistan.

He positioned the KDP as a responsible actor, noting the party has shouldered responsibilities when required and never avoided its duties. Barzani expressed hope that the upcoming vote would address existing problems and bring a new chapter of progress for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

A significant part of his speech focused on constitutional implementation. He stated that fully applying the Iraqi constitution is essential for resolving many long-standing national issues. Furthermore, he highlighted the KDP’s achievements in infrastructure, including road networks and tourism development, stressing that these accomplishments required persistent effort and strategic planning.

Barzani also discussed water conservation, calling for the development of dams and ponds to secure resources for future generations. He described water management as vital to sustaining the Kurdistan Region’s growth.

The president emphasized Kurdistan’s culture of coexistence as a cornerstone of society. He urged all political actors to ensure the electoral campaign remains peaceful and free from division. Collaboration between the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) continues based on electoral merit, he added.

In closing, Barzani thanked the Kurdish people for their resilience against economic pressures, including delayed salaries. He praised their determination and reaffirmed the importance of the democratic process in Kurdistan for achieving lasting stability and prosperity.

Overall, the speech underscores the KDP’s commitment to democratic governance, social cohesion, and sustainable development, reinforcing the democratic process in Kurdistan as central to the region’s future.
