The annual Haddaq competition has returned, marking a key highlight in Bahrain’s Nasser bin Hamad Season for Marine Heritage Sports. This beloved event emphasizes Bahrain’s maritime heritage, attracting sailors and enthusiasts who celebrate the nation’s seafaring traditions. Organizers aim to combine competition with cultural appreciation, ensuring every participant experiences the spirit of the sea.
This year, the competition features two exciting rounds. The first round begins on Friday and Saturday for the Cup of Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa. The second round, scheduled for the following week, will be held for the Cup of Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa. Each round promises high energy, friendly rivalry, and community engagement, showcasing Bahrain’s dedication to preserving traditional marine sports.
More than 900 sailors will participate, distributed across 180 boats. Competitors will set sail at dawn on Friday, pursuing four main fish species: kingfish, sheari, hammour, and sakhan. Each catch will be carefully monitored, with prizes awarded to the most skilled and strategic participants. The competition fosters patience, dedication, and respect for the sea, reinforcing values deeply rooted in Bahraini culture.
The Haddaq competition is part of the broader Nasser bin Hamad Heritage Marine Sports Season, the largest platform in Bahrain and the Gulf region for reviving traditional maritime events. The season also includes rowing boat races, the Al-Hair Oyster Extraction Competition, open water swimming, and the Nahham Competition. These events celebrate Bahrainis’ historical connection to the sea and honor the professions of their ancestors.
Since its launch eight years ago, the heritage season has grown into a popular national festival. It draws thousands of participants and visitors each year, creating opportunities for families and communities to engage with Bahrain’s past. Organizers aim to use the season as a bridge between tradition as well as modernity, ensuring Bahrain’s maritime heritage continues to inspire future generations.
Through Haddaq and related events, Bahrain demonstrates its commitment to cultural preservation, community cohesion, and national identity. This annual celebration reminds everyone that the sea remains central to Bahraini life, connecting history, sport, and social engagement. For participants and spectators alike, the competition provides both excitement and a meaningful connection to Bahrain’s maritime heritage.
