Bahrain Uses Space Technology to Preserve Ancient Dilmun Burial Mounds

Bahrain has launched an innovative project to protect the Dilmun burial mounds, one of the country’s oldest archaeological treasures. Using satellite imagery and artificial intelligence, the initiative combines modern technology with cultural heritage preservation. Consequently, it represents a major step forward in documenting and safeguarding historical sites.

The Bahrain Space Agency led the project, guided by senior space data analyst Aisha Al-Jowder. She emphasized the significance of the mounds, which date back to the third millennium BC. These structures showcase the Dilmun civilization’s commercial and cultural influence in the Arabian Gulf. Furthermore, they reflect early human settlement patterns and social development in the region.

Al-Jowder explained that the project applies deep learning techniques to analyze high-resolution satellite images. This approach allows precise identification of mound locations and quantities. In turn, it creates a detailed digital database. The database will support documentation, protection, and future archaeological research, strengthening scientific understanding of the site.

The monitoring focused on six key areas in western Bahrain, including Janabiyah, A’ali, and Hamad Town. Researchers documented approximately 14,000 burial mounds across these regions. This comprehensive coverage highlights the exceptional cultural value of the site at both regional and international levels. Moreover, it emphasizes the importance of preserving Bahrain’s historical identity.

The initiative aligns with national priorities to employ space technology and modern tools for sustainable development. It also supports Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030 by promoting a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy. The project demonstrates how scientific advancements can enhance cultural heritage preservation.

The Bahrain Space Agency also plays a strategic role in assisting decision-makers. By providing reliable technological solutions, it supports various sectors, including cultural and scientific fields. The agency’s work ensures that historical preservation and technological innovation complement each other effectively.

Experts noted that the project sets a model for integrating technology with archaeology. It ensures ongoing protection for the Dilmun burial mounds and enriches global understanding of Bahrain’s history. Additionally, it encourages future research initiatives and collaboration with international scholars.

Through this project, Bahrain strengthens its commitment to cultural heritage. It also showcases how technology can safeguard ancient sites. Ultimately, the Dilmun burial mounds project represents a fusion of history, innovation, and national pride.
