Bahrain Strengthens Role in Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization

The Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization held its 63rd annual session in Kampala, Uganda, from September 8 to 12, 2025. Bahrain actively participated in the gathering, reaffirming its commitment to advancing international law and supporting global cooperation. The Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization once again provided a platform for dialogue between nations from two continents.

Ambassador Yousef Abdulkarim Bucheeri, Director-General of Legal Affairs and Human Rights at Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led the delegation. He emphasized Bahrain’s dedication to international law as a core principle of peace and security. Moreover, he underlined the nation’s determination to contribute to sustainable development through legal cooperation.

The Ambassador highlighted the organization’s essential role in strengthening multilateral cooperation between Asia and Africa. He explained how collaboration ensures legal frameworks can adapt to rapid global changes, such as climate issues, conflicts, and technological transformations. Furthermore, he stressed that Bahrain stands firm in supporting shared visions that serve peace and development.

The session opened under the patronage of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, with a speech delivered on his behalf by Parliament Speaker Anita Amongg. She called for stronger solidarity between Asian and African countries. Additionally, she noted the importance of facing global challenges collectively, from economic disparities to environmental concerns.

Throughout the conference, member states discussed pressing issues on the international legal agenda. They reviewed strategies to enrich the work of the International Law Commission and the United Nations General Assembly. They also examined ways to strengthen the role of law over force in international relations.

Moreover, the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization was established in 1956 and now includes over forty member states. It continues to play a key role in studying international legal issues and formulating unified positions. Significantly, it provides a bridge between Asia and Africa while amplifying their voices in global decision-making.

Bahrain’s active engagement in Kampala reaffirmed its leadership in advancing legal cooperation. The country demonstrated its readiness to support collective efforts for peace, justice, and sustainable development. The Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization remains central to achieving these goals and fostering stronger partnerships across continents.
