Bahrain Leads Global Efforts to Protect Children’s Rights in the Digital Space

Bahrain is strengthening its legislative and community measures focused on protecting children in the digital environment. The kingdom aims to create a safe online space where children can learn, explore, and develop without exposure to cyber risks.

Mahdi Al-Shuwaikh, a member of the Council of Representatives, highlighted Bahrain’s proactive approach during a workshop on “Children’s Rights in the Digital Environment” at the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union General Assembly in Geneva. He emphasized that protecting children in the digital environment requires coordinated national and international efforts.

Al-Shuwaikh noted that rapid digital transformation provides immense educational opportunities but also exposes children to cyberbullying, exploitation, and digital violence. He stressed the need for comprehensive legislation, monitoring, and oversight to address these risks effectively.

The kingdom has introduced laws criminalizing the exploitation and abuse of children online. These laws impose stricter penalties for cybercrimes and integrate children’s rights into national cybersecurity strategies. Authorities regularly monitor these measures to ensure effective implementation.

Bahrain also focuses on raising public awareness. Government agencies and civil society organizations run initiatives targeting children and families, promoting safe technology use. These programs work in tandem with regional and international partnerships, including collaborations with UN organizations.

Al-Shuwaikh emphasized that families, schools, and society must cooperate to create a safe, supportive digital space for children. He highlighted that technology should empower children, not threaten their wellbeing or rights.

He also stated that protecting children online is now a global responsibility. Parliaments worldwide must develop legislation aligned with international agreements to safeguard young users. Bahrain advocates for making children’s digital rights a permanent part of the global parliamentary agenda.

Experts recognize Bahrain as a regional model for protecting children in the digital environment. Its integrated approach combines legislation, oversight, as well as community engagement to ensure online safety and educational opportunities.

While combining strong laws, oversight, and awareness campaigns, Bahrain continues to lead efforts toward safe technology use. The country demonstrates that protecting children in the digital environment requires collective action, foresight, and international collaboration.
