Bahrain Introduces Remote Notarization for Faster Legal Services

Bahrain is making a major leap in digital transformation by launching remote notarization services. The Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs, and Endowments announced this new system to streamline legal processes. Officials highlighted that this initiative boosts efficiency while ensuring document authenticity.

During the official announcement, Minister Nawaf Al-Maawda explained how users can access the service. In the first phase, people authenticate documents using an electronic key and an OTP notification system. Later, a more advanced system called Key 2.0 will replace this method. The service costs six dinars, giving users a secure, verifiable document for international use.

Authorities stressed that remote notarization makes verification easier. People can check a document’s authenticity quickly and even cancel it without visiting a notary’s office. Furthermore, the system works in both Arabic and English, making it accessible to more people.

Many citizens wondered if older authenticated paper documents needed updates. Officials reassured the public that all old documents remain valid. Users can still choose traditional notarization if they prefer. The goal is to offer flexibility while encouraging digital use.

Assistant Undersecretary Naif Al-Dhawadi revealed another major change. The Notarization Department now directly supervises private notary work. A different body previously handled this task. With this shift, the government plans to improve oversight and maintain high standards.

Dana Khamis Al-Zayani, Undersecretary for Courts, Family Reconciliation, and Alimony, described the cancellation process. The steps for canceling a notarized document follow the same method as registration. This ensures consistency and avoids unnecessary problems.

This digital system connects with multiple government agencies. For example, it links with the real estate registration system to check property restrictions. It also connects with court records to confirm that no criminal cases exist against transaction parties. Additionally, it verifies whether an individual is alive before approving legal transactions.

Moreover, the system confirms the validity of lawyers’ and private notaries’ licenses. The visual session feature allows direct interaction between notaries and clients, removing the need for in-person visits. Instead of signing documents manually, users enter an OTP verification code, making the process faster and more secure.

Blockchain technology plays a key role in this transformation. The system stores documents in blockchain format, preventing forgery and allowing secure digital transactions. Government agencies and institutions will exchange notarized records electronically, cutting paperwork and saving time.

With Bahrain’s push for digital efficiency, remote notarization will transform legal services. The move to digital notarization introduces a new level of convenience, ensuring that legal processes become faster, safer, and more reliable. Remote notarization is shaping the future of legal authentication in Bahrain, making services more efficient for everyone.
