Bahrain Highlights Role of Sports Tourism at Regional UN Tourism Meeting

The Minister of Tourism emphasized the significant role that sports tourism plays in boosting the economy of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Speaking at the 51st meeting of the Regional Committee of the United Nations Tourism Organization for the Middle East, the Minister highlighted how hosting major sporting events contributes to attracting investment and diversifying sources of income in the region.

The Minister underscored the importance of collaboration among GCC nations to promote sports tourism and strengthen intra-regional travel. With the Middle East witnessing an increasing number of international sports events, there is a strong opportunity to enhance cultural exchange while showcasing the rich heritage of the Gulf countries.

Bahrain’s Commitment to Sports Tourism

Sports tourism is a key pillar of Bahrain’s 2022-2026 tourism strategy, with a focus on bringing major global events to the Kingdom. The Minister noted that developing world-class sports infrastructure has played a crucial role in positioning Bahrain as a preferred destination for international tournaments. Investments in modern stadiums and multi-purpose sports complexes have significantly boosted Bahrain’s ability to host top-tier competitions.

Bahrain’s success in attracting international sports events has led to increased visitor numbers, enhanced global visibility, and expanded economic opportunities. The Minister stressed that sporting events not only drive tourism but also support related sectors such as hospitality, retail, and entertainment, creating a sustainable impact on the national economy.

Strengthening International Tourism Partnerships

On the sidelines of the event, the Minister held bilateral meetings with counterparts from Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Discussions focused on enhancing tourism cooperation and exploring opportunities for joint initiatives that could benefit the broader Middle East region.

With sports tourism continuing to grow as a major contributor to economic and cultural development, Bahrain remains committed to positioning itself as a leading destination for international sporting events. The Kingdom’s focus on infrastructure development, strategic partnerships, and tourism innovation ensures that it remains at the forefront of the evolving global tourism landscape.
