Autonomous Taxi Expansion Accelerates in Abu Dhabi

Autonomous taxi expansion continues in Abu Dhabi as smart mobility gains momentum. The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), under the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has now extended driverless taxi services to Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands.

This initiative is part of Abu Dhabi’s long-term strategy to make 25% of trips dependent on smart mobility by 2040. It builds on a partnership involving autonomous driving company WeRide, ride-hailing platform Uber, and Tawasul Transport, a local operator.

These two islands represent a strategic expansion. Al Reem and Al Maryah are dense commercial, financial, and residential hubs. Their complex traffic and mobility needs provide an ideal testing ground for autonomous taxi expansion. This move is seen as a natural next step after earlier deployments on Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and routes serving Zayed International Airport.

Since launching in December 2024, the fleet has tripled in size. Uber users in Abu Dhabi can now book these driverless rides in multiple locations. As a result, the emirate’s smart mobility network now reaches nearly half of its urban zones.

The expansion demonstrates growing public confidence in autonomous technology. It also reflects Abu Dhabi’s determination to improve transport efficiency and safety using artificial intelligence.

Additionally, the ITC has confirmed plans to expand coverage across Abu Dhabi Island. These steps bring the city closer to large-scale commercial operation of autonomous services.

Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of ITC, called the expansion a milestone in the smart mobility roadmap. He said targeting higher-traffic areas would test safety, reliability, and service consistency. He added that the project offers new transport solutions and enhances the quality of life for residents.

The latest autonomous taxi expansion supports both innovation and sustainability. It also highlights Abu Dhabi’s commitment to public-private partnerships in mobility innovation. With stronger demand and growing tech adoption, more areas are expected to join the network soon.

In conclusion, autonomous taxi expansion marks a key chapter in Abu Dhabi’s transformation into a future-ready city. Each step brings smarter, cleaner, and more connected transport options to its people.
