ASEAN Committee and UN-Habitat Lead Major Beach Cleanup in Kuwait

Kuwait recently hosted a successful beach cleanup initiative organized by the ASEAN Committee in Kuwait (ACK) with UN-Habitat. This beach cleanup initiative aimed to raise awareness about environmental preservation and encourage public responsibility. It also highlighted ASEAN’s commitment to protecting the environment.

ACK Chairman and Indonesian Ambassador to Kuwait, Lena Maryana, noted that Kuwait remains very clean, but some areas still suffer from litter. Therefore, the activity brought together all ASEAN embassies in Kuwait. She explained, “Cleanliness is beautiful and forms part of our cultural and religious teachings.”

Moreover, more than 150 participants collected trash along the shoreline in just one hour. Organizers compared this effort to the work of ten beach-assigned sanitation workers. This comparison illustrated the significant community effort needed to maintain Kuwait’s coastline.

In addition, UN-Habitat Program Manager in Kuwait, Dr Ameera Al-Hassan, explained that the initiative aimed to teach participants about types of waste commonly discarded on beaches. Consequently, people better understand the importance of reducing litter and preserving Kuwait’s natural beauty.

Looking ahead, ACK announced the Winter Market event at the Indonesian Embassy on December 13. The market will feature culinary items, crafts, and products from ASEAN countries. Furthermore, the public is invited to join, not just ASEAN citizens or the diplomatic corps. Organizers hope the event will strengthen cultural understanding and promote regional connections.

Additionally, Dr Al-Hassan noted that the campaign is part of a larger effort to promote environmental awareness. Together with the ASEAN group and the oil sector, upcoming activities include tree planting, sports competitions, recycling programs, and family-focused events. These initiatives aim to reduce waste and engage the community.

Ultimately, the beach cleanup initiative shows the power of community action and regional cooperation. By combining education, public participation, and practical work, Kuwait’s beaches remain clean and enjoyable for everyone.
