Doha, Qatar – Al Wakrah displayed remarkable resilience as they fought back twice to hold Al Taawoun FC to a 2-2 draw in their AFC Champions League Two Round of 16 first-leg encounter at Khalifa International Stadium on Wednesday.
The thrilling clash saw Saudi Arabia’s Al Taawoun take the lead twice. Only for the Qatari side to respond with equalizers. This set up a decisive return leg in Buraidah next week.
Match Highlights
The visitors struck first when Roger Martinez won a penalty after being brought down by Hamdy Fathy and Almahdi Ali. This allowed Achraf Mahdioui to convert from the spot. Additionally, Martinez almost doubled the lead minutes later. However, his effort was saved by Saoud Al Khater. Then, Musa Barrow’s follow-up deflected out for a corner.
Al Wakrah responded strongly in the second half, finding the equalizer within 10 minutes. Farid Boulaya delivered a pinpoint cross for Assal, who finished clinically at the far post.
However, Al Taawoun quickly regained the lead. Martinez showcased his individual brilliance. He dribbled past two defenders before firing a low-driven shot past Al Khater to restore the advantage.
Al Wakrah refused to back down, and in the 70th minute, Boulaya turned provider once again. He delivered a precise cutback for Gelson Dala, who calmly slotted home the equalizer.
Second Leg Awaits
