The Harris Endorsement of Abdul El-Sayed brings former Vice President Kamala Harris to Michigan on Tuesday. Harris plans campaign events in Detroit as Democrats seek support for their Senate nominee. The visit marks their first public campaign appearance together since Harris endorsed El-Sayed.
Harris will participate in a roundtable addressing Black maternal health during her Michigan visit. Medical providers and women are expected to discuss healthcare experiences involving pregnancy and childbirth. She will also appear at an event organized by Detroit’s chapter of the NAACP. Additionally, Harris plans meetings with local officials during her time in Detroit.
El-Sayed secured the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s open Senate seat during August’s primary election. He previously served as health director for both Detroit and Wayne County. He now faces Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the November 3 general election. Rogers previously represented Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Michigan contest has attracted national attention because control of the Senate remains contested. Democrats currently need to retain Michigan while gaining additional Republican-held seats. Republicans, meanwhile, are working to defend their existing Senate majority during November’s elections. Consequently, both parties have directed substantial campaign resources toward competitive Senate contests.
Harris previously announced her support for El-Sayed after his Democratic primary victory in August. Since then, the two have communicated several times about the Michigan campaign. However, Tuesday’s events represent their first scheduled public appearance together during the campaign.
The former vice president’s visit also focuses attention on Black voters in Detroit. The city remains an important Democratic constituency within Michigan’s electoral landscape. Rogers has also campaigned in Detroit while seeking support among voters across Wayne County. His campaign has highlighted outreach to Black voters and other Democratic constituencies.
Wayne County played an important role during the Democratic primary earlier this year. Representative Haley Stevens defeated El-Sayed there before he secured the statewide nomination. Stevens represented a more establishment-oriented wing of the Democratic Party during that primary. The result has encouraged both campaigns to focus closely on Detroit-area voters.
El-Sayed has promoted several progressive policy positions during his Senate campaign. His platform includes support for universal healthcare and opposition to United States arms sales to Israel. His positions have generated support among some progressive voters while also producing criticism. The Israel-Gaza conflict remains particularly significant within Michigan’s diverse Democratic electorate.
His position on Israel has also created divisions among some Jewish voters in Michigan. El-Sayed has described Israel’s military campaign in Gaza as genocide, while Israel rejects that characterization. He has also apologized for previous comments that drew criticism and emphasized his commitment to Jewish safety.
Rogers has used El-Sayed’s positions on Israel and other issues during his campaign. His campaign has also criticized El-Sayed’s previous statements and political associations. Meanwhile, El-Sayed has defended his positions while emphasizing healthcare, economic concerns, and domestic policy. The competing approaches have made the Michigan Senate contest a closely watched national campaign.
The Harris Endorsement also connects the Michigan contest with Harris’s broader political activities. She has not announced whether she intends to seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. Nevertheless, her current campaign appearances have renewed discussion about her future political plans. She is also scheduled to visit Nevada and Georgia during her campaign activities.
Michigan will become the fifth state scheduled to vote in the Democratic presidential primary. That status gives the state additional importance for potential presidential campaigns. Harris’s presence there therefore carries significance beyond Tuesday’s Senate campaign events. Still, her current public activities remain focused on supporting Democratic candidates during the midterm elections.
The Harris Endorsement follows broader Democratic efforts to unite voters after a competitive primary. Other prominent Democrats have also publicly supported El-Sayed since he secured the nomination. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg previously appeared in Detroit and encouraged Democratic voters. The party has continued emphasizing cooperation ahead of the November election.
Meanwhile, Rogers has continued his own outreach across Michigan communities during the general election campaign. He has sought support from Republicans, independents, and some Democratic voters in Detroit. His campaign has also emphasized issues including education, housing, and economic concerns.
Tuesday’s events will give Harris and El-Sayed an opportunity to address voters together publicly. Their discussions will focus partly on Black maternal health and healthcare costs. The events also provide El-Sayed with additional national exposure before the November election.
The Michigan Senate race will continue through the November 3 general election. Both campaigns are expected to maintain extensive voter outreach across the state.
