Age-Friendly Health System Status Awarded to Al Wakra Hospital in Qatar

Al Wakra Hospital in Qatar has officially joined the Age-Friendly Health System movement. This milestone was achieved after receiving recognition from the US-based Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). The IHI is a global leader in healthcare advancement and supports systems that improve the lives of older adults.

Significantly, this recognition confirms the hospital’s commitment to delivering quality care for people aged 60 and above. Al Wakra Hospital, along with Rumailah Hospital, has adopted the core principles of the Age-Friendly Health System to enhance patient services. As a result, older adults now benefit from more effective, respectful, and personalized care.

Moreover, this achievement is a reflection of Qatar’s growing focus on healthcare for its aging population. The country, through Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), continues to promote excellence in elderly care. By aligning with IHI’s evidence-based practices, HMC is creating an age-friendly health system to raise the bar for geriatric services.

Dr. Hanadi Al Hamad, who leads HMC’s long-term care initiatives, played a key role in this recognition. She explained that the hospital’s success came from a multidisciplinary effort. In addition, she emphasized the importance of adapting healthcare systems to meet the changing needs of older adults.

Furthermore, Dr. Omar Al Qahtani, CEO of Al Wakra Hospital, praised his team for their dedication. He noted that this honor is not just a label but a call to do even more. Therefore, the hospital aims to expand its age-friendly programs as a health system focused on enhancing patient-centered care.

Equally important, Nasser Al Naimi of HMC’s Healthcare Quality Institute highlighted the hospital’s efforts. He said the collaboration with IHI had led to major improvements. Thus, Qatar’s healthcare system continues to earn global trust and recognition.

Finally, Melissa Panagides-Busch of IHI welcomed the hospital to the initiative. She noted that joining the Age-Friendly Health System shows a strong commitment to high standards. She added that IHI looks forward to supporting Al Wakra Hospital as it grows.

Altogether, this recognition reflects Qatar’s leadership in the region. With institutions like Al Wakra Hospital embracing the Age-Friendly Health System, the country is creating a more supportive and inclusive environment for its elderly citizens.
