Kuwait Extends Special Leave for Employees Accompanying Patients Under New Civil Service Law Amendment

Under an amendment to Article 45 of the Civil Service Law, employees in Kuwait can now take up to one year of special leave with full pay to accompany a patient, provided there is confirmation from the Ministry of Health.
The legislation also permits an additional extension of up to six months without pay.

Previously, the maximum period of paid leave was limited to six months.
The revised policy offers greater support for families during prolonged medical treatments.

In a statement, Kuwait’s Ministry of Health welcomed the Cabinet’s decision, describing it as a “humanitarian step” that recognizes the vital role of family support in patient recovery.
The ministry noted that the previous six-month limit often caused significant stress for families, disrupting continuity of care.

The new law, the ministry added, ensures greater stability for patients and their families throughout the treatment process.

The Ministry of Health also emphasized that the amendment reflects Kuwait’s broader commitment to humanitarian values and family-centered care, placing citizens’ welfare at the core of public policy.
