Kuwait Introduces KD75 Fine for Applying Makeup While Driving Under New Traffic Law

Kuwait has rolled out a new traffic regulation that imposes a KD75 fine (approximately $250) on women caught applying makeup while driving, classifying the behavior as a form of distracted driving. The law, which came into effect on Tuesday, is part of a nationwide effort to enhance road safety and curb reckless driving practices.

Youssef Al Rabah confirmed that applying makeup behind the wheel now carries the same legal weight as using a mobile phone or eating while driving. He added that repeat offenders could face escalated penalties under the new regulation.

The measure follows troubling traffic data from 2024, which recorded 284 road fatalities, including 11 children under the age of 14, sparking renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety rules.

Public figures and social media influencers have responded swiftly to raise awareness. On Monday, well-known Kuwaiti columnist Laila Al Qahtani took to social media with a clear warning: “Ladies, warning: Don’t apply makeup while driving. The fine is KD 75 starting tomorrow.”

The new regulation is part of broader reforms aimed at reducing distractions on the road and reinforcing Kuwait’s commitment to safer driving environments for all.
