Dubai International Airport Unveils AI-Powered ‘Unlimited Smart Travel’ for Seamless Passenger Journey

In a significant leap toward hassle-free travel, Dubai International Airport has introduced a pioneering immigration service enabling select passengers to pass through passport control without stopping for traditional identity checks.

Coinciding with Dubai AI Week, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA-Dubai) unveiled the “Unlimited Smart Travel” service in the First and Business Class lounges at Terminal 3, which integrates advanced AI-driven facial recognition technology.

“This service aligns with our vision to enhance the quality of life for travelers and streamline immigration procedures,” GDRFA said in a statement. Describing it as a “qualitative leap” in smart mobility, the authority emphasized that it boosts efficiency, increases passenger throughput from one to ten individuals simultaneously, and enhances traveler and staff satisfaction.

Announcing the new initiative at the AI Innovations Conference, Lt Gen Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA-Dubai, highlighted the new upgrades that make immigration processes ten times faster.

A senior official explained that the new technology leverages data from the previously launched Smart Tunnel initiative in 2020. “Based on our five-year experience with the smart tunnel, we’ve successfully developed AI capabilities enabling us to process ten individuals in just 14 seconds without queues or waiting,” he said.

Currently available exclusively to departing passengers, the system uses facial recognition cameras placed throughout lounge areas, allowing travelers to pass through in groups without presenting any physical documents. Officials noted plans to extend the service to include arriving passengers in the future, emphasizing travelers will only need to register once, after which their data is securely stored.

The “Unlimited Smart Travel” service builds upon similar innovations like the “Travel Without Borders” project unveiled at GITEX Global 2024, marking another milestone in Dubai’s ongoing efforts to revolutionize airport experiences through cutting-edge technology.
