Bahrain’s Lawmakers and Tech Center Advance AI Regulation in Bahrain

Bahraini lawmakers are pushing forward with bold steps to strengthen AI regulation in Bahrain. The Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee of the Council of Representatives met to review several key legislative topics. Among the most prominent issues was a draft law focusing on artificial intelligence technologies and their usage.

The committee welcomed experts from the Nasser Scientific and Technical Center for in-depth discussions. Together, they examined a 2019 draft law submitted by the Shura Council. The law aims to regulate artificial intelligence systems across sectors. It covers ethical standards, technical controls, and data usage in AI development.

Alongside this, the committee also discussed Bahrain’s need to align with Gulf neighbors. A proposal urged the government to coordinate with the Gulf Cooperation Council. This would help develop a unified regional strategy for leadership in artificial intelligence.

Another motion promoted the use of AI in ministries. It encouraged automating public services to enhance efficiency and innovation. Committee members stressed that integrating AI in government will modernize systems and reduce operational delays.

Beyond AI matters, lawmakers reviewed other legislative items. These included the Bahrain International Commercial Court decree and treaties on judicial cooperation. They approved both decree-laws and submitted final reports to the Speaker’s office.

However, voting on the new Lawyers’ Law was delayed until a future session. The same applied to a proposal on employing children of deceased citizens. These items remain on the agenda for upcoming meetings.

Throughout the session, the committee maintained a clear focus on national advancement. The dialogue with the Nasser Center showed shared goals for innovation and legal oversight. Lawmakers believe this cooperation will enhance transparency and accountability.

The committee concluded that AI regulation in Bahrain is essential for responsible progress. They committed to ongoing collaboration with experts. Through these efforts, AI regulation in Bahrain moves closer to reality, ensuring both growth and safeguards.
