A glimpse of the future arrived in the skies above the UAE this week as Dutch aviation firm PAL-V unveiled its revolutionary flying car. The PAL-V Liberty was showcased at the Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park (SRTIP).
Blending the functions of a roadworthy vehicle and a gyroplane, the PAL-V Liberty is the world’s first commercial flying car designed for both land and air travel. It has a maximum airspeed of 180 km/h and a flight range of 500 kilometers. The vehicle promises to transform everyday commutes and regional travel. It offers an innovative escape from road congestion.
To operate the Liberty, drivers will need both a standard driving license and a gyroplane pilot license. Aimed at high-end individual and corporate users, the vehicle allows users to take off from designated airstrips. Thus, they can bypass traffic with a swift takeoff and seamless transition into the skies.
The flying car is not entirely new to the region. Dubai-based aviation firm Aviterra has already placed an order for 101 units of the PAL-V Liberty, targeting markets in the Middle East and Africa. This order is backed by one of the founders of the executive aviation company Jetex. Aviterra’s involvement signals growing demand for advanced mobility solutions in the region. Current global orders for PAL-V stand between €150 and €200 million. Moreover, 20–30% of that figure originates from Middle Eastern clients.
PAL-V CEO and Founder Robert Dingemanse expressed optimism about regional prospects. He revealed plans to establish a fully functional assembly line in the Middle East. Currently, all production takes place in the Netherlands. However, the company aims to expand operations once regulatory clearances are secured.
Discussions are already underway with aviation authorities, including the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA). Dingemanse noted that international interest in PAL-V is rising. Major certification bodies such as EASA and the FAA are setting the tone for global regulatory approval.
With the PAL-V Liberty, the concept of flying above traffic is no longer a fantasy but an approaching reality. The vehicle offers a transformative leap in personal mobility.
