Oman Names Roads After Influential Leaders to Strengthen National Heritage

Muscat – Oman has undertaken a significant initiative to honor its cultural and historical heritage by renaming key roads and landmarks after notable Omani leaders. This move is in line with the vision of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq. It aims to promote national values and foster a stronger sense of identity and unity among Omanis. This initiative contributes to the promotion of National Heritage.

Experts point out that this practice is deeply rooted in Oman’s long history. It showcases the contributions of its leaders in various spheres and emphasizes the nation’s distinct identity. Renaming major routes after influential figures serves as a bridge between the country’s past, present, and future generations. It ensures that Oman’s legacy endures and highlights its National Heritage.

Oman, with its rich history spanning millennia, has played an important role in regional and global affairs. Its leaders have shaped the nation’s cultural, intellectual, and political standing on the global stage, contributing to its National Heritage.

Among the newly renamed roads is Sultan Thuwaini bin Said Road, which connects Muscat to the Dakhliyah, Dhahirah, and Buraimi regions. Sultan Qaboos Road also connects Muscat to the Batinah region. Several other roads have been renamed to honor Sultan Faisal bin Turki, Sultan Taimur bin Faisal, and other key figures from the Al Busaidi dynasty. This underscores their lasting impact on Oman’s National Heritage.

Dr. Mahmoud bin Abdullah al Abri, Secretary of the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, expressed his approval of the initiative. He highlighted its role in reinforcing national identity. He explained that the renamed roads are more than just functional pathways. They serve as historical symbols that strengthen a collective sense of belonging. They encourage a deeper connection with Oman’s National Heritage.

Historian Dr. Badriya bint Mohammed al Nabhani echoed these sentiments. She emphasized that naming roads after Oman’s sultans pays tribute to their contributions to the country’s unity and strength. “These names instill pride, preserve Oman’s cultural landscape, and raise public awareness of the leaders who have shaped the nation’s development,” she said. This further highlights Oman’s National Heritage.

Professor Dr. Saif bin Nasser al Maamari, Head of the Department of Curricula and Teaching at Sultan Qaboos University, also praised the initiative. He noted its alignment with efforts to foster national pride. He explained that incorporating historical elements into the country’s infrastructure strengthens Oman’s identity. It ensures that its heritage remains an integral part of daily life.

Researcher Dr. Bahiya bint Saeed al Adhoubi commended the renaming effort. She emphasized that it not only contributes to infrastructure development but also actively preserves the country’s historical narrative. It highlights the importance of its National Heritage. She suggested the integration of educational programs and interactive tools, such as digital road panels, to further enhance public engagement with Oman’s rich history.

“This initiative is about more than just renaming roads,” Dr. Bahiya said. “It’s about documenting history and ensuring that future generations understand the contributions of those who helped shape Oman’s National Heritage.”
