Iraq Grants Solar Power License for 1,000 MW Project

Iraq is taking a significant step towards renewable energy. The country’s National Investment Commission (NIC) has granted its first solar power investment license. The license was awarded to TotalEnergies, a major French energy company. The project will have a capacity of 1,000 MW, which will play a vital role in the country’s clean energy transition.

Dr. Haider Mohammed Makiyya, Chairman of the NIC, shared that construction has already started at the Ratawi oilfield in Basra. This follows the financial closure of the project. The new solar power facility will cover 9,000 dunams of land. It will feature two million solar panels spread across four generation units. The project is a crucial part of Iraq’s broader plans to diversify its energy sources and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

In addition to the TotalEnergies project, the NIC is also moving forward with a second solar power initiative. The second project will also have a 1,000 MW capacity and will be located in southern and western Iraq. NIC is currently finalizing the requirements for this license. This development demonstrates Iraq’s commitment to increasing its renewable energy capacity.

The country’s shift to solar power marks an important milestone. The planned solar projects are expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions. These projects also provide economic opportunities, including jobs in construction and energy sectors. The NIC aims to attract more international investors to support Iraq’s renewable energy ambitions.

As Iraq continues to advance in solar power development, it will undoubtedly play an essential role in shaping the future of renewable energy in the region. These projects will help the country meet its energy needs while promoting sustainability. The growing focus on renewable energy shows Iraq’s commitment to a greener future.

In conclusion, Iraq’s push towards solar power projects highlights its dedication to renewable energy. The investment licenses for TotalEnergies and the second Emirati company are key steps in this transformation. With more projects underway, Iraq is moving closer to a sustainable, energy-efficient future.
