Baha’s Stone Craft Keeps Tradition Alive as Local Artisans Preserve Heritage

RIYADH: The time-honored craft of stone building continues to flourish in Saudi Arabia’s Baha region, where skilled artisans uphold a rich architectural tradition deeply connected to the natural surroundings. For generations, local builders have relied on the region’s abundant stones and trees to construct enduring homes and structures.

Stone craftsmanship in Baha remains a vital cultural practice, with artisans working diligently to merge tradition with modern needs. Builders adapt ancient techniques to contemporary architecture, ensuring that this heritage craft continues to evolve. Many locals recognize the importance of preserving this legacy, which is deeply rooted in the region’s identity.

Experienced builder Mohammed Al-Ghamdi explained that constructing these traditional stone homes requires immense effort and patience. The process extends over several months and involves different types of stones, each serving a crucial function. Cornerstones provide stability, while long stones and support stones, known as Al-Mateen or Al-Dahr, help maintain the structure’s integrity.

Adding the final touches, craftsman Saleh Al-Zahrani described how houses receive mud plaster coatings for durability. Juniper wood, sourced from local trees, is used for doors and windows, often featuring intricate carvings. White quartz stones further enhance the buildings, giving them a unique aesthetic appeal.

Villages in Baha share distinct architectural traits. Homes stand closely together, forming narrow alleyways that lead to a central gathering space. This design fosters social interactions and strengthens community bonds, reflecting the region’s deep-rooted traditions.

As interest in traditional architecture grows, local builders are ensuring that Baha’s stone craft remains relevant. The fusion of heritage and innovation allows this ancient building method to thrive, securing its place in modern Saudi Arabia.
