The Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Medical and Educational Sciences has announced the winners of the 2024 Hamdan Medical Awards. These awards honor excellence in medical research and innovation across the Arab world and the UAE. Among the distinguished recipients, a research team from Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) received the prestigious Arab Award for Research in Healthcare. They were recognized for their groundbreaking study on transitioning to oral antibiotics in Gram-negative bacteremia cases.
The clinical trial, conducted by HMC’s infectious disease specialists in collaboration with Kuwait University and Istanbul Medipol University, explored the safety and effectiveness of shifting from intravenous (IV) to oral antimicrobial therapy. The study focused on patients with Enterobacterales bacteremia who had completed 3-5 days of microbiologically active IV therapy.
The research provides valuable insights into antimicrobial stewardship and aims to enhance patient care by optimizing antibiotic use. Dr. Muna Al Maslamani, Medical Director of HMC’s Communicable Disease Center and Hamad General Hospital, expressed pride in the team’s achievement. She emphasized the collaborative effort behind the study.
“This award is a testament to our team’s dedication and highlights the significance of joint research in improving patient care. Our study demonstrates the potential for better clinical outcomes through the thoughtful use of antibiotics. I extend my deepest gratitude to all the researchers, clinicians, and collaborators involved,” Dr. Al Maslamani stated.
