International Mediation Award Presented to Qatar’s Amir

Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has received international recognition for his diplomatic efforts and role in mediation. The Foreign Policy Association presented a medal honouring his contributions to peacebuilding, dialogue and international cooperation.

The ceremony took place in New York on Thursday, October 22. Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, accepted the award on the Amir’s behalf.

The event brought together Foreign Policy Association leaders, board members and other senior representatives. The association’s President and CEO, Noel Lateef, and Vice-Chairperson Sana Sabbagh also attended the ceremony.

According to the association, its board unanimously approved the award. Members recognised the Amir’s efforts to promote international understanding, encourage peaceful conflict resolution and strengthen cooperation between countries.

During her acceptance speech, Sheikha Alya highlighted Qatar’s growing involvement in international mediation. She pointed to the country’s diplomatic efforts in Gaza, Afghanistan, Darfur, Chad and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

She explained that Qatar’s approach centres on two main principles. First, mediation should pursue sustainable peace through dialogue rather than relying solely on immediate agreements. Second, peace agreements should include reconstruction and development measures to support lasting stability.

Furthermore, Sheikha Alya stressed the importance of education and opportunities for young people. She described these investments as essential to preventing renewed conflict and helping communities recover after war.

Her remarks also addressed regional security concerns affecting Qatar and neighbouring Gulf countries. She condemned Iranian attacks against Qatar and other Gulf states, while raising concerns about restrictions on navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Nevertheless, she reaffirmed Qatar’s support for diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing regional tensions. In particular, she highlighted Pakistan-led mediation between the United States and Iran as an effort to seek a diplomatic resolution.

The speech also emphasised the importance of maintaining communication during periods of conflict. Sheikha Alya argued that continued dialogue remains necessary, even when regional tensions make diplomatic engagement more difficult.

In addition, she highlighted Qatar’s partnership with the United States across several areas. These include security, energy, education and investment, which continue to form part of the countries’ bilateral relationship.

The recognition places Qatar’s mediation efforts at the centre of the association’s decision. However, the award itself does not resolve the conflicts discussed during the ceremony or guarantee progress in ongoing negotiations.

Sheikha Alya also conveyed the Amir’s appreciation to the association for the honour. She presented the recognition as an acknowledgement of his work promoting diplomacy, dialogue and peace.

The ceremony comes as Qatar continues to pursue diplomatic engagement across the Middle East and beyond. Through mediation and international partnerships, Qatar seeks to encourage negotiations and support efforts to reduce conflict.

Overall, the award highlights the Foreign Policy Association’s recognition of Qatar’s diplomatic role. It also draws attention to the continuing challenges of achieving sustainable peace through negotiation, reconstruction and international cooperation.
