Saudi Security Pledge Strengthens Egypt Ties

Egypt’s Saudi security pledge signals closer coordination between Cairo and Riyadh amid growing regional tensions and concerns over Yemen. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi announced that Egypt would take necessary measures to protect Saudi Arabia, reinforcing longstanding ties between the two countries. The declaration has raised questions about potential military cooperation and its implications for Red Sea security.

On Sunday, Egypt’s National Defense Council, chaired by el-Sisi, confirmed Cairo’s commitment to supporting Saudi Arabia. The council said assistance could help protect the kingdom’s stability, resources, territorial integrity, and Islamic holy sites. Furthermore, it described Saudi national security as closely connected to Egypt’s security and broader Arab interests.

Both countries maintain substantial military capabilities and have strengthened political coordination through regular high-level meetings. Their relationship gained additional attention following recent exchanges between Saudi and Egyptian leaders. Consequently, analysts view the latest announcement as an extension of an established partnership rather than an isolated diplomatic statement.

Political analyst Muneef Al-Harbi described the relationship as a longstanding pillar of regional security. He recalled earlier periods of cooperation and mutual support during major regional crises. For example, Saudi Arabia supported Egypt in 2013, while Cairo participated in the 1990 coalition effort to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi occupation.

Al-Harbi also referred to historical cooperation among Riyadh, Cairo, and Damascus during the 1950s. Over time, Saudi-Egyptian relations developed into a partnership that responded to changing regional challenges. He argued that stronger cooperation between the two countries could reinforce their individual security and influence across the Arab world.

Yemen remains a significant concern within this broader strategic relationship. Al-Harbi estimated that disruptions to shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait cost Egypt approximately $11 billion. The waterway connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and supports international trade routes leading towards the Suez Canal.

International affairs specialist Ahmed Al-Ibrahim said Egypt’s support extends beyond political solidarity. He argued that threats to Saudi Arabia and Gulf security could directly affect Egypt’s national interests. In his assessment, the announcement also provides a political signal that Cairo considers regional security challenges interconnected.

Al-Ibrahim explained that parliamentary or other required legal authorization could establish the framework for potential Egyptian military action abroad. However, he stressed that such authorization would not automatically mean Egypt had decided to deploy forces. Instead, it would give Egyptian leaders greater scope to consider options if Saudi Arabia requested assistance.

The Red Sea remains central to both countries’ strategic calculations. Egypt depends on safe passage through Bab el-Mandeb to protect shipping bound for the Suez Canal. Similarly, Saudi Arabia has strong interests in safeguarding its coastline, maritime trade, and critical regional infrastructure.

Former Saudi military officer and strategic analyst Abdullatif Al-Mulhim outlined several possible areas for expanded defence cooperation. These include intelligence sharing, early-warning systems, air defence, naval coordination, and logistical support. Such measures could improve responses to Houthi attacks and help protect commercial shipping routes.

Al-Mulhim also highlighted the military resources available to both countries. Citing 2026 Global Firepower figures, he said their combined air fleets exceeded 2,000 aircraft, including more than 500 fighter jets. He argued that greater coordination could strengthen deterrence and improve protection for coastlines and maritime routes.

Nevertheless, Egypt’s pledge does not itself confirm a future military deployment or a specific operational plan. The practical implications will depend on regional developments, legal procedures, and any requests for assistance. Meanwhile, Yemen’s future remains linked to wider security concerns involving maritime traffic, regional diplomacy, and the activities of armed groups.

Ultimately, the Saudi security pledge underscores the close relationship between Cairo and Riyadh. Their cooperation could influence regional defence planning, particularly around Yemen and the Red Sea. However, its eventual impact will depend on how both governments translate their political commitments into practical measures.
