Saudi Families Embrace Digital Majlis

Saudi family chats have become a digital majlis, helping relatives maintain daily connections between face-to-face gatherings.

Family members use group conversations to share news, photographs, plans, greetings, and important announcements throughout the day. As a result, relatives living in different cities can remain involved in ordinary family moments.

For many families, the conversation starts long before relatives meet in person. Someone may send a morning greeting or share an old family photograph. Another relative might announce an engagement or suggest plans for the upcoming weekend.

Family members can then discuss arrangements, change plans, and continue conversations throughout the day. By the time relatives gather, many topics have already received attention inside the group.

The growing role of these chats reflects Saudi Arabia’s highly connected society. Internet access reached 99 percent across the Kingdom during 2024, according to official data. Mobile phones accounted for almost all internet access during the same period.

WhatsApp also remains especially popular among Saudi internet users. Data from 2023 showed that 90.9 percent of internet users used the messaging application.

Within families, however, the importance of group chats extends beyond frequent application use. Relatives use them to communicate practical information and maintain everyday relationships.

Birth announcements often appear in family groups before relatives meet personally. Families also use chats to share congratulations, condolences, addresses, photographs, and gathering arrangements.

Old family photographs can also find new audiences through these conversations. Younger relatives may discover memories that previously remained inside physical albums or personal collections.

The groups can also connect several generations at the same time. Younger members often communicate through short messages, photographs, reactions, and humorous content.

Parents may use the same space for announcements or practical questions. Meanwhile, older relatives increasingly participate through voice messages and photographs.

For relatives who live away from their hometowns, the groups can provide a sense of continued involvement. Small updates can help distant family members follow ordinary moments at home.

A photograph from a family lunch can create a feeling of participation for someone working elsewhere. Similarly, a voice message can allow an older relative to join conversations without typing.

Voice messages can prove particularly useful for family members who prefer speaking over writing. They also provide a simple way for different generations to participate together.

Nevertheless, digital communication also creates new expectations within families. Members may notice when someone leaves a group or ignores an important announcement.

Large groups can also generate numerous notifications throughout the day. Therefore, some relatives choose to mute conversations while continuing to check important messages.

Family members can also face misunderstandings when conversations move quickly between several topics. A message intended for one person may soon involve relatives across multiple generations.

Despite these challenges, family chats generally complement rather than replace personal gatherings. Many relatives continue to view physical meetings as essential for maintaining close relationships.

The traditional majlis remains an important setting for family interaction and social connection. Group chats instead extend conversations into periods when relatives cannot share the same space.

The difference becomes especially clear during family gatherings. Relatives may arrive already familiar with stories or plans discussed inside the group.

A family member might even begin a conversation by referring to something shared earlier online. In this way, the digital conversation continues naturally into the physical gathering.

Saudi families have therefore developed a communication pattern that combines technology with established social traditions. The group chat extends family interaction without removing the importance of meeting personally.

Saudi digital families increasingly use messaging groups to maintain everyday connections across distance. These conversations can support family relationships while allowing relatives to share information quickly.

However, many family members still emphasize the importance of personal interaction. Screens can connect relatives across cities, but they cannot fully reproduce sitting together.

The digital majlis therefore works alongside the traditional gathering rather than replacing it. It keeps conversations active between visits and helps relatives remain involved in daily family life.

As connectivity continues shaping communication habits, family groups are likely to remain part of everyday social interaction. Their role reflects how Saudi families combine established traditions with modern communication tools.

Ultimately, the digital majlis provides another space for relatives to communicate and share experiences. Yet the value of gathering together remains central to maintaining family relationships.
