US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will travel to Kyiv as Washington renews efforts to advance peace talks. The planned visit follows a lengthy meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday.
Witkoff and Kushner are expected to arrive in the Ukrainian capital on Sunday for discussions with Ukrainian officials. Their visit represents their first reported trip to Kyiv as part of the latest diplomatic effort.
The American representatives met Putin for more than three hours inside the Kremlin during their Moscow visit. However, the meeting ended without either side announcing a specific breakthrough or major agreement.
Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov later characterized the discussions as constructive, frank, and useful. Nevertheless, he did not provide detailed information about potential agreements or progress involving the war.
Ushakov said Moscow presented Washington with a broad assessment of developments across the Ukrainian battlefield. At the same time, he indicated that the discussion extended beyond military developments and battlefield conditions.
Economic matters also featured prominently during the Moscow meeting between the American representatives and Russian officials. In particular, both sides discussed potential joint projects that could create mutual economic benefits.
The diplomatic visits come as fighting between Russia and Ukraine continues with growing intensity across multiple areas. Both countries have increased aerial operations while ground forces have struggled to achieve significant movement.
The front line stretches roughly 1,250 kilometers, creating a vast area where Russian and Ukrainian forces continue military operations. Meanwhile, Russia has increasingly deployed fast-moving, jet-powered drones during its recent aerial attacks.
Air-raid sirens have consequently become a familiar part of daily life in Kyiv and other Ukrainian locations. The continuing attacks have added urgency to Washington’s renewed attempt to bring both sides back toward negotiations.
Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have agreed to temporarily pause attacks against each other’s capitals during the diplomatic discussions. The arrangement could provide a limited window for officials to conduct negotiations without direct attacks on Kyiv or Moscow.
However, the broader conflict continues despite the temporary understanding between the two leaders. Both sides remain engaged in military operations, while diplomatic efforts attempt to create conditions for wider negotiations.
Washington’s earlier effort to end the war lost momentum during the previous six months. US attention shifted significantly toward the conflict involving Iran, reducing the focus on negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
Witkoff and Kushner previously traveled to Moscow in January for discussions with Putin at the Kremlin. Their latest meeting therefore marks another attempt by Trump’s representatives to maintain direct communication with the Russian leadership.
The renewed diplomatic activity comes as international attention remains focused on possible pathways toward ending the conflict. Nevertheless, Saturday’s meeting produced no publicly announced agreement capable of changing the current trajectory.
For now, the planned Kyiv visit will give the US representatives an opportunity to hear directly from Ukrainian officials. The discussions could also help Washington assess Ukraine’s position following the latest engagement with Moscow.
Peace talks therefore remain dependent on continued communication between Washington, Moscow, and Kyiv. Although recent meetings have not produced a breakthrough, American officials continue pursuing diplomatic channels.
The next stage of the US diplomatic effort will unfold in Kyiv following the Moscow discussions. Officials will likely focus on the war’s current conditions, potential negotiations, and possible steps toward reducing hostilities.
