Dollar exchange rates moved in opposite directions in Baghdad and Erbil on Tuesday morning, while remaining near 154,000 Iraqi dinars per $100.
The US dollar declined slightly in Iraq’s capital, whereas exchange shops in the Kurdistan Region reported higher rates. Despite the differing movements, the currency remained close to the same overall level in both markets.
In Baghdad, the dollar traded at 153,850 dinars per $100 at the Al-Kifah and Al-Harithiya central exchanges. The rate marked a decline from Monday, when the currency stood at 154,000 dinars per $100.
The change represented a 150-dinar decrease compared with the previous day’s reported rate. However, exchange shops in Baghdad continued to quote a higher selling price for customers seeking US dollars.
Currency exchange shops in the capital sold $100 for 154,250 dinars. Meanwhile, they purchased the same amount from customers for 153,250 dinars.
The reported figures show a difference between the central exchange rate and the prices offered by individual exchange shops. Nevertheless, the dollar remained within a relatively narrow range around the 154,000-dinar level.
In Erbil, the market moved in the opposite direction during Tuesday morning trading. Exchange shops reported an increase in the dollar’s value against the Iraqi dinar.
Exchange shops in Erbil sold $100 for 154,250 dinars, matching the selling price reported by shops in Baghdad. However, the buying rate in Erbil stood higher than the corresponding buying rate in the Iraqi capital.
Erbil exchange shops purchased $100 for 154,150 dinars. By comparison, Baghdad shops bought the same amount for 153,250 dinars, creating a 900-dinar difference between the two reported buying rates.
The contrasting rates emerged as the dollar maintained a similar overall trading level across the two major Iraqi markets. While Baghdad recorded a modest decline, Erbil registered an increase.
Dollar exchange rates in Baghdad fell from the previous day’s central exchange quotation. The Al-Kifah and Al-Harithiya exchanges recorded 153,850 dinars per $100 on Tuesday, compared with 154,000 dinars on Monday.
At Baghdad’s exchange shops, however, customers faced a selling rate of 154,250 dinars per $100. The shops bought the currency at 153,250 dinars, according to the reported market figures.
Meanwhile, Erbil’s exchange shops quoted 154,250 dinars when selling $100. They also offered 154,150 dinars when purchasing the same amount from customers.
As a result, the buying rate reported in Erbil exceeded the Baghdad buying rate by 900 dinars per $100. The selling rate, meanwhile, remained identical at 154,250 dinars in both cities.
The figures provide a snapshot of the Iraqi currency market during Tuesday morning trading. They also highlight different movements between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region despite similar headline rates.
Dollar exchange rates therefore remained close to 154,000 dinars per $100 in both Baghdad and Erbil. However, Baghdad recorded a slight decline, while Erbil reported an increase in exchange-shop rates.
The available market figures do not provide a reason for the differing movements between the two locations. Accordingly, the reported rates reflect the market levels recorded during the specified Tuesday morning period.
The dollar’s selling price reached the same level at exchange shops in both Baghdad and Erbil. However, the two markets recorded significantly different buying rates for the US currency.
Overall, the reported figures show limited movement around the 154,000-dinar level. Baghdad’s central exchanges moved lower from Monday, while Erbil’s exchange shops recorded higher dollar rates on Tuesday.
Dollar exchange rates consequently showed a mixed picture across Iraq, with the capital registering a decline and Erbil recording an increase during the morning session.
