Iraq Recovers Over $1 Million in Anti-Corruption Drive

Iraqi authorities have recovered more than $1 million in public funds and seized additional cash and gold as part of an expanding anti-corruption campaign targeting financial crimes and former officials.

The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) said the Karkh Second Investigative Court recovered more than 1.14 billion Iraqi dinars linked to a financial fraud case involving companies accused of illegally smuggling large sums of cash out of the country.

The court said the recovery followed investigations into networks uncovered by the Iraqi National Security Service, adding that legal action is continuing against companies suspected of using unlawful methods to generate profits at the expense of public funds.

The latest development comes under Operation Dawn, the nationwide anti-corruption campaign launched by Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi in late June in coordination with the Federal Commission of Integrity and the SJC.

In a separate case, investigators said they uncovered 13 billion Iraqi dinars, $400,000 in cash, 40 one-kilogram gold bars, and five kilograms of gold jewellery hidden at several locations in Salahaddin province. The assets are linked to the ongoing investigation involving former Deputy Oil Minister for Refining Affairs Adnan Al-Jumaili.

Judicial authorities said investigations are continuing to trace additional assets and identify other individuals connected to the case.

The campaign has already led to the arrest of dozens of current and former officials, while authorities continue efforts to recover public funds and dismantle corruption networks across Iraq.

According to Transparency International’s 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index, Iraq ranked 136th out of 180 countries, highlighting the country’s ongoing struggle with public-sector corruption despite intensified enforcement efforts.
