Teen Died After Fountain Collapses During Spain World Cup Celebrations

A 13-year-old boy died and several others were injured after a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s FIFA World Cup victory in the western city of Ciudad Rodrigo, local authorities said on Monday.

The municipality confirmed the teenager’s death in a statement, expressing its condolences to the victim’s family and describing the incident as a tragedy that overshadowed what was meant to be a night of celebration.

Emergency services said they received multiple calls shortly after 12:30 a.m. local time reporting that a fountain had collapsed with numerous people on it. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Officials also confirmed that another young person was injured in the incident, while local media reported that several others sustained injuries.

According to Spanish media, the fountain gave way after a large number of people climbed onto the structure to celebrate Spain’s first FIFA World Cup title since 2010.

Authorities have not yet released further details about the cause of the collapse, and the incident remains under investigation.
