UNHCR And Zain Celebrate 10 Years Of Refugee Support

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and Zain Group have marked World Refugee Day in Kuwait by celebrating 10 years of partnership in support of refugees and forcibly displaced communities across the Middle East and North Africa.

The event, held under the patronage of Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, brought together government officials, diplomats, private sector representatives and civil society organisations to highlight the importance of humanitarian cooperation.

Over the past decade, Zain has partnered with UNHCR on seasonal campaigns, including winter and Ramadan initiatives, helping provide cash assistance to more than 11,000 refugees and displaced people across the region. The support has enabled vulnerable families to meet essential needs while preserving their dignity during times of hardship.

A panel discussion during the event explored the growing role of businesses in humanitarian work, with speakers examining how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies can contribute to development and relief efforts.

Khaled Khalifa, UNHCR’s Senior Advisor and Representative to the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, described Zain as a strategic humanitarian partner whose long-term commitment has strengthened support for refugees and displaced families. To mark the anniversary, UNHCR unveiled the slogan “Giving is the Finest of Deeds” in recognition of the decade-long collaboration.

Nawaf Al-Gharabally, CEO of Zain Kuwait, said the partnership reflects the company’s commitment to creating lasting social impact through collaboration, innovation and responsible business practices. He reaffirmed Zain’s support for initiatives that promote dignity, resilience and humanitarian action.

This year’s World Refugee Day is observed under the theme “Until Everyone is Safe”, highlighting safety as a fundamental human right while calling for greater international solidarity with refugees and the communities that continue to host them.
