Kuwait Expands Livestock Reforms to Strengthen National Food Security

New plans for Kuwait livestock development are moving forward as national authorities and regional agricultural experts work to modernize the country’s livestock sector. The initiative focuses on sustainability, biosecurity, and improving local food production. Officials also aim to strengthen support systems for farmers while increasing efficiency across the industry.

The Arab Organization for Agricultural Development is cooperating with Kuwait’s Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources on several projects tied to food security goals. Drar Al-Mustafa, head of the organization’s regional office, said the partnership seeks to improve livestock sustainability through technical and administrative reforms.

According to Al-Mustafa, the current strategy includes reviewing and restructuring subsidy systems linked to feed and dairy production. Authorities want to ensure support reaches eligible beneficiaries while encouraging stronger domestic output. Officials believe these reforms can help reduce waste and improve resource management in the sector.

The initiative also targets modernization of Kuwait’s laboratory infrastructure. Plans include upgrading national veterinary facilities and expanding cooperation with international laboratories. Training programs for Kuwaiti specialists will support these efforts and improve the country’s ability to detect and manage livestock diseases.

Animal health remains a major focus of the partnership. Officials plan to reassess epidemic response systems and strengthen Gulf-wide early warning networks. The proposed reforms also include developing a national biosecurity framework to reduce disease transmission risks and protect livestock populations across Kuwait.

Digital transformation forms another key part of the strategy. Authorities aim to introduce livestock numbering systems and GIS-based farm identification technologies. In addition, they plan to establish a unified database containing accurate livestock statistics and farm information.

Experts believe these systems will help decision-makers provide targeted government support and improve long-term planning. Better data collection could also strengthen sustainability and support national self-sufficiency goals. Officials continue to view agriculture and livestock reforms as essential parts of future food security planning.

The latest discussions come as many countries across the region increase investments in agricultural resilience and domestic production. Rising global food costs and supply chain disruptions have pushed governments to prioritize local food systems and resource management.

Al-Mustafa confirmed that technical experts will soon participate in a remote meeting to finalize implementation schedules and establish a detailed action plan. The discussions will align with Kuwait’s wider vision for sustainable development and resource efficiency.

Support from Ibrahim Al-Dukhairi, Director-General of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development, also highlights the importance of the partnership. Officials expect the new measures to accelerate Kuwait livestock development and improve the country’s preparedness for future food challenges.

As cooperation continues between regional organizations and Kuwaiti authorities, Kuwait livestock development remains central to efforts aimed at improving sustainability, protecting animal health, and boosting national food security.
